How to shoot film in low light

Shooting film over the years in the midwest, I’ve had no choice but to figure out how to shoot film in low light. Trust me when I say, I’ve had many frustrating moments where the rolls I shot did not turn out. Thankfully, all those hard lessons learned I can now share with you.

Here are some of my best tips so you can start practicing (and mastering!) shooting film in low light!

This is one of my favorite photos I’ve ever taken and it was with a Kodak TriX disposable camera with the flash on in a very dark, unfinished basement.

I shot this with my Nikon F5 and portra 400 film in a pretty dimly lit kitchen (my settings for this shot were a shutter speed of 1/30 and an aperture of f/ 2.8).
